Ambulatory Surgery
With the advent of endovenous laser treatment, patients now very
rarely require Ambulatory Surgery for their large varicose veins.
Endolaser is an in-office minimally invasive alternative to traditional
hospital-based Ambulatory Surgery.
Ambulatory Surgery or ‘ligation and stripping’, used
to be prescribed when the main vein and its main valve at the groin
are incompetent. This procedure, as performed by the VTC, is done
in a hospital or ambulatory surgery unit under local anesthesia
with sedation. The procedure generally lasts less than an hour and
patients are able to return home walking in 2-3 hours and resume
normal activities the following day.
For quick recuperation and excellent cosmetic results, we use an
advanced surgical technique that requires only two small hidden
incisions, one in the pubic area and the other on the inside of
the knee or just under the ankle. The main vein is then removed
in a novel atraumatic manner (invagination).
In conjunction, a mini-phlebectomy of the larger branches of the
long saphenous vein is often used to complement the procedure. Similarly,
follow-up sclerotherapy can also be performed after surgery to erase
any residual or leftover spider veins.
